County Offaly: Away with the fairies!

The Faithful County. ‘Esto Fidelis’ is the motto on the coat of arms, meaning ‘Be you faithful’. Some say the faithful bit came from a local journalist in the 1950's, as Offaly GAA competed without success for many years, but always believed that better times were around the corner, so they always had faith. Monegall is the ancestral home of former US president Barack Obama. Croghan Hill is the remains of an extinct volcano and rises 232m from the Bog of Allen in County Offaly. Offaly is also home to a place called Blue Ball.
